Purpose and scope
ACU may award transfer credit toward an ACU credential for documented, college-level learning completed at other institutions and through approved alternative credit pathways. Transfer credit decisions are made to protect academic quality and ensure the credit applies meaningfully to ACU degree and program requirements.
This policy applies to:
- Undergraduate programs (certificates and bachelor’s degrees)
- Graduate programs (master’s degrees and graduate certificates)
Definitions
- Transfer credit: Credit accepted by ACU for college-level learning completed outside ACU and applied toward an ACU credential.
- Residency: The minimum number (or percentage) of credits that must be completed through ACU coursework to earn an ACU credential.
- Official transcript: A transcript sent directly to ACU from the issuing institution/service or delivered in a sealed, institution-issued envelope.
- Articulation agreement: A written agreement between ACU and another institution describing guaranteed or structured transfer pathways for specified courses/programs.
- Prior Learning Assessment (PLA): A structured evaluation of learning gained outside the classroom (e.g., ministry training, professional experience). PLA may include portfolios, third-party evaluations, or competency assessments.
Eligible sources of transfer credit
ACU generally considers transfer credit from the following sources, subject to the evaluation criteria below:
- Colleges/universities with institutional accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) (commonly described as “regional” or “national” accreditation).
- Other degree-granting institutions that are legally authorized by a U.S. state to award degrees but are not institutionally accredited (including certain religious institutions). These credits may be considered case-by-case and may require additional documentation; acceptance is not guaranteed.
- U.S. military training and coursework documented on an official Joint Services Transcript (JST) or other official military transcript.
- ACE‑evaluated learning (American Council on Education credit recommendations), when appropriate for the program.
- Credit-by-exam and standardized exams such as CLEP and DSST, when ACU has established equivalencies.
- Consortium/visiting student coursework completed through an approved consortium/partner arrangement.
- Dual-enrollment coursework completed while in high school if it appears on an official college transcript and meets college-level standards.
Transfer credit limits and residency requirements
ACU applies transfer credit within the following limits (unless a specific program states a stricter limit):
- Bachelor’s degrees: Up to 75% of the program’s total required credits may be accepted in transfer. At least 25% must be completed in ACU residency.
Example: In a 120-credit bachelor’s degree, up to 90 credits may transfer and at least 30 credits must be earned at ACU. - Undergraduate certificates: Up to 50% of required credits may be accepted in transfer; at least 50% must be completed at ACU.
- Master’s degrees / graduate certificates: Transfer credit is limited to up to 25% of the program’s required credits (typically no more than 9 semester credits), and at least 50% must be completed in ACU residency.
Additional residency/limit notes:
- Some programs may require a minimum number of ACU credits in the major/specialization or at the upper-division level.
- Transfer credit does not waive or reduce required capstones, culminating assessments, or practicum/internship requirements, unless explicitly approved in writing by the program.
Minimum grade, level, and “currency” of coursework
- Undergraduate transfer: Courses must generally be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher (or “Pass” with documentation showing performance comparable to C or higher).
- Graduate transfer: Courses must generally be completed with a grade of B (3.0) or higher.
- Remedial/developmental and non-credit coursework is not transferable toward an ACU credential (though it may be used for prerequisite or placement guidance).
- Course currency: ACU generally does not impose a universal expiration date for transfer credit; however, ACU may require more recent coursework for currency-sensitive requirements (e.g., counseling methods, technology, research methods), or may apply older coursework only as electives.
Evaluation criteria and how credit applies
ACU evaluates transfer learning based on:
- Course level and credit amount (semester/quarter hours; quarter hours are converted to semester credits)
- Content comparability and learning outcomes
- Academic rigor and appropriateness for the credential level (undergraduate vs graduate)
- Grade earned and documentation quality
- Fit to degree requirements (general education/core, major/specialization, or elective credit)
Transfer credit may be applied as:
- Direct equivalency to a specific ACU course, or
- Block/elective credit within an appropriate subject area and level when a direct match is not available.
Documentation required
Students must submit:
- Official transcripts from all prior colleges/universities.
- For nonstandard or case-by-case reviews (as requested by ACU):
- Course descriptions and/or syllabi (including topics, learning outcomes, contact hours, graded work)
- Reading lists or major assignments (if needed)
- For ACE/military/exams: official score reports, JST, or ACE documentation
- For PLA/portfolio: a completed PLA petition, portfolio artifacts, and any required third-party verification
Process, timelines, and notification
- ACU provides an official transfer credit evaluation after admission and receipt of all required documents.
- Typical timeline: 10–15 business days after ACU receives complete documents; complex reviews (syllabi/PLA) may take longer.
- Results are communicated in writing and, when applicable, posted to the student’s record once the student enrolls.
Fees
- Standard transcript-based transfer evaluations: No fee (unless published otherwise in the current tuition/fee schedule).
- PLA/portfolio or special evaluations: A fee may apply; any fee will be disclosed before the evaluation begins.
Posting transfer credit and GPA treatment
- Accepted transfer credit is recorded on the ACU transcript with the source, credit hours accepted, and an appropriate notation (e.g., TR).
- Transfer credits do not carry quality points and do not affect the ACU GPA. Only ACU coursework is included in ACU GPA calculations.
- Transfer credit counts toward earned credits and may satisfy degree requirements, but graduation honors, class rank (if used), and GPA-based academic standing are based on ACU coursework.
Sample transcript statement (transfer credit):
“Transfer credit accepted and applied toward ACU degree requirements is recorded as TR credit. Transfer grades are not included in the ACU GPA.”
Special situations
- Repeated coursework / duplicate content: ACU will not award duplicate credit for substantially similar learning. When duplicates exist, ACU generally applies credit once and may use the strongest evidence of mastery to determine equivalency.
- Internships, practicums, labs, and clinical elements: These are evaluated carefully for supervised hours and outcomes and may be limited or require ACU completion.
- Religious/ministry training: Non-collegiate training may be considered only through documented PLA/ACE‑evaluated pathways and must meet college-level outcomes.
Articulation agreements and consortium/dual enrollment
- When an applicable articulation agreement is in effect, ACU applies transfer credit consistent with the agreement’s published terms, provided the student meets all stated conditions (e.g., minimum grades, continuous enrollment).
- ACU publishes current articulation/consortium arrangements (if any) and reserves the right to revise agreements prospectively.
Appeals
A student may appeal a transfer credit decision by:
- Submitting a written appeal to the Registrar within 30 days of the decision, including any new documentation (e.g., syllabus, learning outcomes, graded work).
- If unresolved, requesting a secondary review by the appropriate academic leader (e.g., Program Director/Dean).
Appeal decisions are provided in writing and are final unless new, material documentation is submitted.
Outgoing transferability disclaimer
Acceptance of transfer credit into ACU does not guarantee that ACU credits, credentials, or coursework will be accepted by another institution. Transferability is always determined by the receiving institution.
